Chris Hemsworth rules in 1st official pics from delayed Red Dawn

Remember three years ago when MGM said they were remaking the '80s teen action classic Red Dawn? Well, after studio bankruptcy, picking up a new distributor and completely changing the film's villains digitally, it's finally headed to theaters.

Take a look at (three years younger) Chris Hemsworth, The Hunger Games' Josh Hutcherson and the rest of the cast in the first official pics from this long-delayed flick.

So assuming you're interested in seeing this flick in the first place, you might be interested in a recap of just why we've waited so long for a release. Well, the short version is that MGM shot it, then promptly went bankrupt, leaving the film (and, it should be noted, many others, including the next James Bond flick) in limbo. Eventually FilmDistrict picked it up to distribute it, but they ran into another problem.

See, the original 1984 film featured Russians as the villains (it was 1984, so it was still cool to hate Russians), but with the Cold War long over, MGM opted to cast the Chinese as the bad guys. But hold on. Now that China makes up a sizable portion of international box office revenue for films lucky enough to be shown there, it would be unwise to make a flick featuring Chinese soldiers attempting to invade America. So, with a little digital magic, the Chinese villains became North Koreans (because it's still cool to hate them, apparently).

So here we are with a new distributor, new villains and a final release date of Nov. 21, 2012. But after all that, this little action flick about high school kids in the Pacific Northwest who have to defend their school from invading North Koreans might just be headed for box office gold. Why? Well, back in 2009 it starred a bunch of largely unknown young actors. Now it stars Thor and Peeta. The cast also includes the likes of Josh Peck (who you may remember from his years as a Nickelodeon teen star), Tom Cruise's son Connor and former Wonder Woman Adrianne Palicki.

Check out the pics of Hemsworth wielding an assault rifle alongside the rest of the cast below. What do you think? Will you be lining up for your ticket to see a new band of Wolverines save America?
