Which OTHER Marvel baddie was almost in The Avengers?

As Marvel weaves its Cinematic Universe together across multiple heroes and films, it's used Thor to set up Avengers baddie Loki—which worked well. But guess which other villian was almost at the center of the epic team-up?

Depending on your taste in superhero movies, your opinions on writer Zak Penn likely vary, with everything from Elektra, X-Men 3: The Last Stand and The Incredible Hulk on his resume. But you've got to give him credit for one thing—keeping the broad strokes of the Avengers script alive over the years, until Joss Whedon finally brought it to the big screen.

Penn recently did a sit-down with Comic Book Resources, talking about his long career. One of the most interesting tidbits? Apparently, though Loki was there in most drafts, there was a point during the script phase where they considered using Captain America baddie the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) in The Avengers.

"[There were] some discussion of it being Red Skull. If I thought I could have gotten away with Thanos. I would have put him in there."
Very interesting, and it's hard to imagine Avengers without Loki there. What do you think? Do you still want to see more of Red Skull?
