Kirk's crazy car + 12 more sci-fi props recycled in movies and TV
Though sci-fi films and television series offer us a look at possible futures and fantastical worlds, it all often happens on a tight budget—meaning you cut costs wherever you can.
One of the biggest costs come in props, because it ain't cheap to create those wild and fantastical scientific devices or futuristic doodads. So what's the easiest way to trim the budget? Reuse those props.
And it happens. A lot. From The Matrix to Predator, many famous franchises have recycled props or sets from time to time. Heck, half the phasers and tech used in the various incarnations of Star Trek could be traced back to the original series.
Here are some of the more interesting examples—and let us know—did you ever notice any of these crossovers on screen?

Battlestar Galactica (2004)/The Robinsons Lost in Space: Spaceship set Syfyâs critically acclaimed Battlestar Galactica reboot already looked good on screen, but the creators caught a lucky break when it came time to show off the Battlestar Pegasus. John Woo had put together a pilot for a rebooted Lost in Space series for The WB, which wasnât picked up. So the BSG crew snagged the sets on the cheap and turned them into the Pegasusâ CIC.
Sin City/Kill Bill: Swords This is just cool. The swords from Tarantinoâs awesome Kill Bill also popped up in Sin City, which automatically makes Sin City 10 points cooler.
Back to The Future/Alien: Mr. Fusion Before Doc Brown installed the Mr. Fusion on his time machine DeLorean, the device showed up in the background of Ridley Scottâs original Alien.
Monty Pythonâs Life of Brian/Jesus of Nazareth: Period sets Though not exactly sci-fi, Monty Pythonâs Life of Brian is still a beloved alt-history piece of awesome weirdness. With the Python crew working on the cheap, they were able to acquire sets from the recent big budget flick Jesus of Nazareth to make their Biblical era more believable.
Buckaroo Banzai/Star Trek: The Oscillation Overthruster This tech prop made the rounds from Buckaroo Banzai, over to Star Trek, and was used on a handful of occasions in different capacities.
Starship Troopers/Firefly/Planet of the Apes (2001): Body armor As if Joss Whedonâs cult fave Firefly wasnât cool enough, the series also cut some costs by reusing body armor from the cheesy sci-fi classic Starship Troopers. Some Alliance troops seen in the series sported the same gear as Ricoâs Roughnecks. Also, the Starship Trooper helmet was repurposed in the 2001 reboot of Planet of the Apes.
Ghostbusters/They Live: PKE meter The ghost-hunting tool from Ghostbusters also popped up in the flick They Live as a communication device. It looked weird enough that it could really pull off both uses.
Star Trek: TOS/Batman/Bewitched: Kirkâs car Called the Reactor Mach II, this sci-fi inspired classic car showed up in the original Star Trek with Capt. Kirk behind the wheel, and was also Catwomanâs car in the original Batman TV series. Oh, it also had a quick cameo in the original Bewitched series.
Forbidden Planet/Numerous classic sci-fi films: Robby the Robot The classic robot from Forbidden Planet made the round through numerous sci-fi projects in the 1950s and 1960s, from Lost in Space to Twilight Zone.
Dark City/The Matrix: Rooftop sets Though it went on to be a seminal work of science fiction, the first Matrix film had to cut a few corners during production to stay under budget. Most notably? The use of old sets from the sci-fi flick Dark City, which popped up intermittently throughout the film.
The X-Files/The Big Lebowski: 1973 Ford Torino car The Dudeâs car used in The Big Lebowski was destroyed in The X-Files season eight episode âSalvage.â
Stargate Atlantis/Blade Trinity: Sets Several sets were passed around between Syfyâs Stargate Atlantis, and the film Blade Trinity, with the final battle in Blade Trinity being set on several sets eventually featured in Atlantis.
Terminator 2/The Predator: GE M134 Minigun The awesome Minigun from Predator popped up again in Terminator 2. The gun is awesome, so it was a great fit in both action extravaganzas.
