Jor-El + 12 more sci-fi dads who saved their kids from apocalypse
In fatherhood, you're called upon to do a lot of things: change diapers, teach your child right from wrong, put Band-Aids on boo-boos, etc. But these dads went way above and beyond the call of duty—and actually helped saved their kiddos from the apocalypse itself.
In honor of Father's Day this Sunday, we've pulled together 13 hardcore dads who battled everything from aliens to zombies to keep their little ones safe, setting the bar pretty high for your average pops.
Happy Father's Day, and remember these guys when you're spending time with your old man!

Jor-El, Superman: With Krypton doomed, Supermanâs father saved his son by putting him on a one-way spaceship to Earth.
The Man, The Road: In Cormac McCarthyâs novel, and the movie based on it, the unnamed Man protects his son in a post-apocalyptic world until his own death. His son lives on with another group of travellers.
Tom Mason, Falling Skies: Tom is a near-cheesy example of the perfect dad, taking on alien hordes to rescue one of his sons, and putting his life on the line on a daily basis to keep them all safe from invading aliens.
William Adama, Battlestar Galactica: He was a hard man, sure, but when push came to shove he protected his family. The Admiral led his son, along with the last remaining remnants of the 12 Colonies, to a new home on Earth.
Don, 28 Weeks Later: His life may have ended on the bad end of being a ruthless zombie that helped spread the infection, but Don meant well. He got his kids into the safe zone (well, it was at the time), and helped get them in position to escape London before it was completely overrun with zombies.
Rick Grimes, The Walking Dead: It hasnât been easy, but Rick has fought for survival—and battled tons of zombies—to keep his son safe.
John Winchester, Supernatural: The father of monster hunters Sam and Dean probably wouldnât win many Father of the Year contests, but, he did battle the Yellow Eyed Demon until his death, and left behind his journal that helped his sons immensely in their numerous efforts to avert Armageddon.
Walter Bishop, Fringe: His fathering skills definitely leave something to be desired, but despite being a crazy mad scientist, Walter has proven to also be a fantastic dad—saving his son (and the world) in the recent season finale.
Dr. Ashford, Resident Evil Apocalypse: He may have been to blame for some of the zombie shenanigans, but the good doctor made a point to manipulate Alice and her band of zombie killers to rescue her daughter when the zombie apocalypse came to town.
Ray Ferrier, War of the Worlds: Though it was framed around an alien invasion, the recent War of the Worlds flick was really the tale of a father just trying to protect his kids against a world gone wild.
Johnston Green, Jericho: One of the greatest things about the first season of CBSâs short-lived post-apocalypse tale Jericho was the small townâs mayor Johnston. He kept the town safe, and his kids safe, as the town prepared for war against a neighboring city.
Angel, Angel: The plot revolving around Angelâs son Connor was either a love it or hate it move, but Angel did everything he could to protect his boy, even facing off with dragons and demon hordes in the series finale.
David, The Mist: This one is just brutal. Facing what seems to be a no-win situation, David opts to kill his son to âsaveâ him from being taken by aliens. But, after killing his son—but before he kills himself—he realizes rescue has arrived. Ouch.
