DC Comics is about to turn a major character gay. But which one?

Nine months ago, DC Comics completely rebooted its superhero universe, generating plenty of controversy along the way and even driving up sales. But it's not done changing things yet, and it seems that the next change the company's ready to make is in the sexual orientation of one of its characters. But who?

At London's Kapow comics convention over the weekend, DC co-publisher Dan DiDio was asked about an interview with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) magazine The Advocate last summer in which he said he was more interested in introducing new LGBT characters to the DC Universe than in rebooting old characters as gay or bisexual. A Kapow audience member pointed out to DiDio that DC has changed numerous other physical characteristics of the characters during its reboot, but not sexual orientation. Why?

DiDio responded by saying that he'd changed his position on switching sexual preference for existing characters, and he claimed that the company's about to re-introduce a previously straight character who will become "one of our most prominent gay characters" alongside the likes of Batwoman.

Some comics fans will see this as an inevitable response to Marvel Comics' plan to wed two gay characters in next month's issue of Astonishing X-Men. Maybe it is, but it's also an intriguing mystery for us to ponder. Based on the few clues we've been given so far, it seems that it won't be an already prominent character in the reboot, which leaves out Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and so on. It's more likely a character that's either just beginning to reappear in the universe or one we haven't seen make a return yet. Among the contenders, then, are Martian Manhunter, Black Adam, Shazam! (aka Captain Marvel) and Hawkgirl. There are, of course, dozens more potential choices lurking out there in the far corners of the DC canon, but so far DiDio and company haven't even dropped a hint in the direction of male or female, so we'll just have to wait and see.

What do you think? Who's your bet for the next major DC gay character?
