The Golden Gate Bridge is 75: Check out 24 times it starred in sci-fi
San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge—a frequent guest star in sci-fi movies and TV—turns 75 years old this weekend. Opened in 1937 after four years of construction, the bridge is a distinctive landmark that (based on what we've seen on the screen) will last far into the future.

Star Trek Appearing most frequently in the Star Trek franchise, the Golden Gate Bridge has appeared in The Voyage Home, Undiscovered Country, Star Trek (2009), Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise. Starfleet headquarters is located nearby, and accordingly, the bridge appears in a number of ways: it was destroyed in a terrorist attack during Deep Space Nine, and also almost destroyed when Nero attacked the planet in Star Trek.
Precinct 17 Seen only briefly in Ron Moore's un-picked up pilot episode where magic has replaced science in society, the bridge has a slightly different form than what we're used to: covered in plants and floating.
Journeyman The bridge makes a brief appearance in the opening credits for the short-lived television series Journeyman.
X-Men: Last Stand One of the most notable appearances of the Golden Gate Bridge is when it is used in the third X-Men movie, X-Men: Last Stand. Here, it's used by Magneto and his allies to reach Alcatraz Island, where a potential cure for the mutants is stored, setting up a major battle in the film.
Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus The bridge gets damaged in this 2009 film, following a plan to attract the creatures to San Francisco Bay, where they can be neutralized. Unfortunately, the shark decides to takes a bite out of the bridge.
Monsters vs. Aliens In the Dreamworks animated film Monsters vs. Aliens, the bridge played a prominent role. When a robot probe lands on the planet, the Monsters are sent out to fight it, with the resulting battle taking place on the bridge.
The Core When the Earth's core stops, the planet's protection from solar radiation is diminished. One such casualty is the Golden Gate Bridge, which receives a concentrated dose of sunlight ... or something, melting it in half.
Superman The bridge is seen in Richard Donnar's 1978 movie, Superman: The Motion Picture. Superman's nemesis Lex Luthor hatches a plot to split off California from the rest of the United States by way of a nuclear missile and the San Andreas fault. The missile goes off and sets off a major earthquake, the aftermath of which involves Superman saving victims on the bridge.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers Aliens land in San Francisco in the 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, taking over human bodies. At one point, a car chase moves through the toll plaza on the south end of the bridge.
It Came From Beneath the Sea The 1955 film It Came from Beneath the Sea is one of the first science fiction films to feature the bridge. Here, the monster octopus attacks the bridge and San Francisco, leaving them both in ruins.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes The bridge is showcased in the latest addition to the Planet of the Apes franchise, when the enhanced ape Caesar leads his uprising against humanity. The apes and cops converge on the bridge, where a fierce battle ensures.
The Abyss In James Cameron's 1989 film The Abyss, the Golden Gate Bridge is briefly seen when it is threatened by a tsunami towards the end of the film.
Bicentennial Man Set in 2200, Bicentennial Man uses the location quickly as Robin Williams' robot character Andrew makes a trek across the world as he tries to find fellow sentient robots. By this point, a second span has been added to the bridge.
The Book of Eli In the post-apocalyptic world of 2010's The Book of Eli, Denzel Washington's character Eli travels across the United States. He and his companions reach the Golden Gate Bridge towards the end of the film, where they then proceed out to Alcatraz Island.
Flight of the Navigator The bridge shows up briefly in Flight of the Navigator when David Freeman flies past in the alien ship.
Hulk Ang Lee's version of The Hulk features the Golden Gate Bridge as The Hulk rampages through San Francisco, with the military close behind him. Captured and brought to a military base, the Hulk is unleashed as part of an experiment. He escapes into the desert and fights off several attempts to recapture him, ending up on the Golden Gate Bridge, where two F-22 fighter jets attack him.
V In the pilot for the reboot of the ABC show V, an extended breaking news introduction shows the alien ships over notable landmarks, the Golden Gate Bridge amongst them.
Interview with the Vampire The bridge is figured into the opening and the ending scenes of the film Interview With the Vampire, when the Vampire Louis de Pointe finishes up an interview with a reporter, Daniel Molloy. Pushed transform him, Louis attacks Molloy and flees, and the reporter drives away. As he leaves, he's attacked by the vampire Lestat de Lioncourt, who feeds on him and drives away over the bridge.
Raiders of the Lost Ark Blink and you'll miss it. As Indiana Jones travels out to Nepal in Raiders of the Lost Ark, his plane flies right over the San Francisco landmark.
Terminator: Salvation At the end of Terminator: Salvation, John Connor travels to the home of Skynet, which has based itself in the ruins of San Francisco. To get to the system in 2018, Connor has to travel across the bridge, which is destroyed shortly thereafter in an explosion
2012 In the 2009 Roland Emmerich film 2012, the bridge gets a brief cameo when the Genesis is caught in an earthquake. [We couldn't find a pic of the bridge itself, so there surfer dudes'll have to do!]
Futurama The Planet Express crew travels to San Francisco after Bender turns to a life of music following an injury. At this point in time, the center of the bridge is missing, allowing only hover vehicles to travel over it. After arriving, Bender and Beck set up a music festival, Bend Aid, in the park next to the structure.
Stargate: Atlantis In the 100th and final episode of Stargate: Atlantis, "Enemy at the Gate," the bridge is used as a backdrop for the last moments of the show, after Atlantis has been returned to Earth, landing in the Pacific ocean and allowing the entire crew to see the bridge.
10.5 The miniseries 10.5 features the Golden Gate Bridge as a number of powerful earthquakes rock the United States. As the quakes get more violent, a quake hits San Francisco at a 9.2 magnitude, which completely destroys the bridge.
