What's an insane armada of lethal military starships in full combat look like? Pure joy. Check out this fantastic footage from Bandai's Space Battleship Yamato 2199, a new animated epic from Japan that might even make you forget that other Battleship flick.
Based on the 1974 anime series Space Cruiser Yamato, AKA Star Blazers, this latest space opera revamp will keep the same plot and style of the original with updated CG animation and digital sound. Here, the dogfighting and battle choreography are amazing, with fleets of titanic space warships and interstellar frigates attacking from every corner of the solar system, taking full broadsides of laser blasts and particle-cannon volleys.
A live-action version of the vintage cartoon Space Battleship Yamato was released in 2010. Directed by Yutaka Izubuchi, the project will debut as a TV series but will also get a theatrical launch, comprised of the show's first two episodes edited together. Hold fast and hope for an American release!
Space Battleship Yamato 2199 blazes into theaters in Japan this month.
