The last thing we heard about Bill Murray's feelings toward a third Ghostbusters flick was a rumor that he hated the new script so much he ran it through a shredder. But don't count Peter Venkman out just yet. Despite all the times we've heard that he's done, Murray still calls strapping on the proton pack one more time "a possibility."
Speaking to a local TV station in Chicago, where he was on hand to throw out the first pitch for his beloved Cubs, Murray mostly talked baseball, but he did actually take a moment to address the eternally in-development third installment in the Ghosbusters franchise.
When asked about a third turn as Venkman, Murray said simply, "Well, it's a possibility," then quickly moved on to plugging his appearance in Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom later this year.
Yeah, we know, it's not exactly an ironclad statement, but it's a far cry from most of what we've heard about Murray's attitude lately. First, there was that rumor that he shredded the script and sent the pieces back to co-Ghostbusters Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis with a note that read "No one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts!"
Aykroyd later dismissed that rumor, citing mutual respect as the reason why it was utterly bogus.
"Bill Murray is not capable of such behaviour," he said. "This is simply something that would not be in his nature. We have a deep, private personal relationship that transcends business. We communicate frequently and his position on the involvement in Ghostbusters 3 has been made clear and I respect that. But Bill has too much positive estimation of my writing skills to shred the work."
Shredder rage or no shredder rage, until now it looked like Murray was definitely out of the franchise. Granted, an off-handed remark to a reporter during a chat about the Cubs doesn't guarantee us more Venkman, but at least Murray seems to be in a good mood about it.
So, even if Murray is up for more slimy paranormal antics, will Ghostbusters 3 ever get made? And if it does, is there any way it can be something we won't all live to regret?
