1st look at del Toro's Pacific Rim set shows monster-ravaged Tokyo

Guillermo del Toro's humans-and-robots-vs.-sea-monsters flick Pacific Rim is finally taking shape—literally. We've been hearing about it for months, and now we've got our first glimpse of the film's Toronto set. No monsters yet, but take a look at the film's impressive reconstruction of a chaos-ridden Tokyo.

Our first look at this disaster zone came courtesy of the CBC, who visited the set to marvel at how the $150 million blockbuster transformed the Toronto streets into a vision of Tokyo in the midst of a monster-sized conflict. After months of waiting to see something concrete from the production, we're finally getting a look at the battleground where humans and monsters will wage their war, and it seems pretty convincing even without titanic krakens and such roaming through it.

Check out the video and then take a look at the photos below. It's pretty cool to see a practical set of this size take over a portion of a city. Now we just have to picture these streets as though all kinds of badass action is going on.

Pacific Rim stars Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Willem Dafoe, Charlie Day, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini, Diego Klattenhoff and Clifton Collins Jr. It's set to open July 12, 2013.
