5 posters that are (finally!) worthy of The Avengers' awesomeness

Finally! Some Avengers posters that don't make us wanna go "meh." In fact, we think they're actually pretty cool in an exciting and explosive "Let's save New York City from Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and his big bad army of definitely-non-Skrull-Kree" kinda way.

The five gritty new posters assemble Earth's mightiest heroes, the Avengers, made up of our good ol' Captain America (Chris Evans), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Iron Man still sans helmet (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in all kinds of heroic comic book poses, while the Big Apple is literally ablaze.

They're joined by a badass-looking Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson)—director of S.H.I.E.L.D.—and by an equally badass-looking Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders).

Here's the film's official blurb:

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures Marvel's The Avengers—the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

(Is it just us, or does Captain America's helmet look much better on that new poster? Food for thought and debate.)

So what do you think of those new, grittier character posters? Are you excited about the (most likely) glorious epicness that'll be Joss Whedon's The Avengers? Are you all ready to assemble in theaters on May 4, 2012?
