Misunderstood TMNT creator clarifies: Bay's pic could be 'awful'

The plot thickens (even more) for what has quickly become Turtlegate 2012. Just a day after most of the world took his comments about Michael Bay's upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot as a tentative endorsement of the project, the comic's original co-creator Peter Laird has now (vaguely) clarified that wasn't exactly what he meant.

When asked by a commenter why he would back Bay's play to change the Turtles origin story to make them aliens, Laird responded at his official website to say he only thought the notion to potentially create a planet of turtles was (kinda) cool. Apparently his sarcasm didn't translate into text so well.

"Did you really get out of what I wrote that I in any way, shape or form LIKE the idea of a planet of Turtles? If so, I guess I have to re-think how I express myself," he wrote, before adding. "Just so it's absolutely clear—I think a planet of turtles is not, in and of itself, a bad idea for some kind of science fiction/fantasy story. But as a way to explain any aspect of the backstory of TMNT, I think it is awful and unnecessary. Of course, we have no idea at this point if the plan is to have a planet of Turtles. It's probably a good idea to wait and see."

He also addressed the notion that Bay might destroy (or sodomize) the franchise, and said the idea seems a little dramatic.

"He may have made Transformers movies which are not to your taste, but he hasn't turned the properties themselves into 'utter crap,'" he wrote. "I have no particular interest in Transformers' but it seems to me that—like TMNT—it will be around for a long time, well after Michael Bay's involvement with it is done."

Laird's original comments earlier this week were in the same (tentative) vein, when he said, "It's possible that with enough truly creative brainpower applied to this idea, it might actually work. I'm not saying it's probable, or even somewhat likely ... but it IS possible."

So, Laird kinda thinks the world of turtles idea is cool, but not if it's used as a crutch for the origin story, and he's not psyched to have Bay tackling his property, but not necessarily opposed. Got it?

Regardless, it seems Laird isn't nearly as excited as his cohort Kevin Eastman is about this whole thing.
