Watch the touching trailer for a pre-apocalyptic romantic comedy

If Shaun of the Dead can be a romantic comedy set against a zombie apocalypse, why can't Steve Carell and Keira Knightley's Seeking a Friend for the End of the World do the same for impending asteroid-y doom?

Written and directed by Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist's Lorene Scarfaria, Seeking a Friend looks like it's trying to do what any good science fiction does: find the humanity of people in impossible situations. However, this somewhat cloying synopsis doesn't do the film any favors:

Set in a too-near future, a man searches for a meaningful connection as humanity's last days are at hand. Can he find his greatest love at the worst possible time? As the respective journeys of Dodge and Penny converge, the two spark to each other and their outlooks—if not the world's—brighten.

Still, it looks droll and wry and it's got a drunken, lecherous Patton Oswalt. And, hey, I know I'm going to be coerced into seeing at least one romantic comedy this summer—Seeking a Friend opens on June 22, 2012—so I might as well see one that also has an extinction-level event.
