That I Am Legend sequel (prequel?) one step closer to the screen

A long-threatened sequel to the 2007 Will Smith apocalypse flick I Am Legend is moving forward again—but Smith's involvement still hinges on the final version of the script.

The sequel—which could be a prequel, no one is really sure anymore—has been rumored ever since the first film did gangbusters internationally. The original movie was based on the 1954 Richard Matheson novel of the same name.

Warner Brothers has signed Akiva Goldsman and Overbrook Entertainment to create another installment in the (apparent) franchise, according to Deadline. The studio wants Smith to come back as research scientist Robert Neville, but Smith says he want to see the final script before he will consider reprising his role as one of the last men left alive in a mutant vampire-infested version of Manhattan.

For anyone who has seen the movie, this latest news raises the obvious question: If the movie isn't a prequel (which they're now saying it isn't), then how can Smith come back? A crater was all that was left of Neville at the end of the first film, once he blew himself up to help another survivor escape with a potential cure for the virus.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what the studio cooks up.

What do you think? Are you excited to take another trip to post-apocalypse New York with Will Smith?
