David Hewlett: Missing McKay, that Stargate: Atlantis movie and more!

If David Hewlett cracked you up as Dr. Rodney McKay on Stargate: Atlantis, wait'll you meet the REAL David Hewlett! We're thrilled that he's agreed to join us regularly here at Blastr to answer your questions and share whatever happens to be on his mind.

Greetings, people of Earth... and the rest of you! The friendly folks at Blastr have asked me to return and natter, once again, about sci-fi and my geeky world of nerd ...

I've just surfaced from more writing-induced exile, clutching the latest draft of my Debug script and wondering why people outside my head don't do what I command of them. I'm back writing, directing and acting in this puppy because I am a glutton for punishment, and apparently I'm cheaper divided into thirds! Speaking of fractions, Jane, my lovely wife and better 3/4 is working her producorial magic along with those devils at Copperheart Entertainment and we're hoping to have that movie dancing before your eyeballs, soonish! That or I'm shooting it all in a cardboard spaceship with the cast of my son's Kindergarten class ... an electronics kit, some LEDs and a couple of laser pointers and that may be even more genius than what we've already got!

Me and my Stargate sibling Kate Hewlett (I'm in legal proceedings to have her change her name ... people keep thinking we're related!?) didn't have the money to shoot a real pilot for our Assassidate series so after joking about not being able to afford anything more expensive than a Skype call, we filmed it as a Skype call ... the first two nerdy episodes of Assassidate are now available on our YouTube channel.

Still working all the angles on Starcrossed as well! We're in an exciting place with a couple of companies right now and hoping it will all come together in 2012 ... that said, I've learned (from painful and expensive medical experience) not to hold my breath!

Now to your questions...

What was your favorite book of 2011?

Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow was the novel that really stuck with me last year. Barlow writes like Michael Ondaatje but about werewolves (I'm not doing it justice but that's the easiest description). Poetic, brutal and beautiful!

The sad thing is that I only ever read novels in bed and now only on the iPad, and thanks to Netflix and iTunes my reading time is getting eaten up more and more by movies and brilliant sci-fi television, like the UK series Misfits!

Do you miss McKay?

Not really, I'm around him every day! As I clean my teeth ... as I give my full head of lush hair its twice-daily 100 strokes of the hairbrush ... as I hear his dulcet tones fill the empty house with his charming and astute complaints. I do miss Stargates and wormholes and ZPMs and chatty missions and aliens and saving the universe ... and sometimes even Joe Flanigan. ;-)

If you could be any character on Stargate, who would you be and why? It can't be McKay.

That's easy! I'd be Rod ... because he's a cool McKay from a parallel universe!

Will there ever be the Stargate: Atlantis TV movie mentioned a while ago?

Yes! There is going to be a Stargate: Atlantis movie. Unfortunately I'll be making it by myself in my basement. Just need to raise the funds necessary to purchase all of our action figures, and then build some kind of trap to stop them from clogging my toilet, which (once festooned with colorful chevrons) will serve as the Stargate.

Sorry, that's all I've got in the way of news for you when it comes to a Stargate Atlantis movie.

What's your favorite science fiction/fantasy monster?

Without a doubt, Giger's Alien. So naturally I'm dying to see what they've come up with for Prometheus. Which also stars one of my favorite actors, Idris Elba (check him out in the UK TV series Luther!)

If you could choose any profession outside the film and TV industry, what would you like to do? (Let me guess—babysitting!)

Actually, I have discovered that while I am totally in love with my child (who is naturally perfect), I still don't like other people's children!

While most of you, I know, are probably thinking male supermodel, I'm going to go with computer programmer. Low-level languages and assembly stuff, preferably dealing with systems security would be my choice. I could still release a sexy calendar of pinups once a year to keep up with the modeling, right?

And finally: How does your hair grow so quickly?

I don't have an answer for this, but I just really liked the question!

Peace be in the galaxy, fools!

Hewlett!
