LEGO The Lord of the Ring' The Battle of Helm's Deep LEGO added The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit to their arsenal of licenses this year, and luckily for us they went all out with their first play sets based on the classic trilogy. Most impressive is the 1,368-piece Battle of Helm's Deep set that includes castle ramps, gates, secret entrances and eight minifigures: Aragorn, Gimli, Haldir, King Theoden and some Uruk-hai. (Available in June for $129.99)
Illumivor This illuminated shark might be the greatest radio control carnivore we've ever seen! It's definitely the greatest light-up shark we've ever seen. It grabbed our attention across the show floor, and it's even more impressive in the dark, as the 18" shark looks like it's swimming on land, with a glowing set of chomping of teeth and a moving tail. (Available mid-year for $89.99)
Back to the Future Hoverboard According to the future Marty McFly visits in Back to the Future Part II, Mattel is supposed to be the maker of the floating Hoverboard that has replaced skateboards. In reality, Mattel is hitting their Hoverboard invention deadline a little early ... just without the hovering part. Matty Collector is opening up pre-orders for the movie prop replica starting on March 1, and if they can get enough interest for production by March 20, there will be Hoverboards arriving around the holiday season. The Hunger Games Arena Bags and Parachute Containers NECA has a dizzying array of The Hunger Games-inspired swag emblazoned with the flaming mockingjay symbol, but the most interesting offerings are the prop replicas based on items in the upcoming movie. In particular, the District bags reflecting a Tribute's home territory, the Tribute training uniform shirts and the matchstick holder and sponsor parachute container are worthy of a fan's investment. Dana Barrett as Zuul Ghostbusters Figure "Are you the Keymaster?" We bet you say yes once you get a look at Matty Collector's new action figure based on Sigourney Weaver's character from the original Ghostbusters. Possessed by Zuul, Dana's got wild hair and a shimmery dress, just like in the film. To make this buy that much weirder, you can also detach Dana's torso and attach it to her reclining legs on the rooftop sacrificial altar. (Available TBA 2012)
KRE-O Battleship USS Missouri In conjunction with the upcoming Battleship movie based on the strategy game, Hasbro's block construction KRE-O line has a 500-piece U.S.S. Missouri, which is part of the Navy's line of defense against aliens invading the planet. While the boat is all well and good, what really makes it stand out is the alien autopsy room in the center of the play set. We kid you not. See, now you want it too! (Available in May for $69.99)
S.L.U.G.S. (Scary Little Ugly Guys) What M.U.S.C.L.E. figures were to the '80s is what Jakks Pacific hopes S.L.U.G.S. will be to this century. Green plastic zombies and pink humans with hilarious names are broken into waves, with more than 60 characters available to collect. Wonder if parents today will be as annoyed with stepping on them as our parents were back then? (Available spring)
MIB III Weapons and Talking Frank the Pug The jury is still out on how welcome the new Men in Black III movie is going to be received this year, but we welcome the opportunity to get our hands on Jakks Pacific's replica Noisy Crickets, Neuralizers (memory-blanking not included) and Talking Frank the Pug plush. (Available summer 2012)
The Hobbit Plush You think the lure of the One Ring is bad, try denying these Funko plush characters from the upcoming The Hobbit movie. Fuzzy Bilbo comes holding Sting, Gollum's just turning into his crazy cave-dwelling precious self, and Gandalf is just the cutest all-powerful sorcerer ever. (Available Fall 2012)
Light Striper for Bikes Who wouldn't want to Tron-up their standard bike with a high-tech look? Skyrocket's Light Striper is a battery-powered illuminated flexible cord that you can wrap around your bike (or whatever, for that matter) for glow-in-the-dark decorating. It looks amazing, and yes, everything we own is getting wrapped as soon as it hits stores. (Available fall 2012 for $14.99)
Pixar's Brave Doll Heroines with bows are all the rage this year, including Merida, Pixar's feisty star of Brave. The redheaded tomgirl looks like an excellent role model in the making, and Mattel has a Merida doll with bow and arrow accessories coming to shelves when the movie drops in June.
LEGO Monster Fighters If youâre not interested in LEGO licensed play sets, then try their brand-new original theme, Monster Fighters. With an original mythology that is sort of a mashup of The Munsters and the Universal Monsters, there are seven play sets that revolve around collecting moonstones on a revolving wheel. Weâll bite! (Available in June)
Fruit Ninja Plush How many hours have you spent slicing fruit with your ninja-powered digits playing Fruit Ninja? Yeah, we donât want to calculate our wasted time either, but we can support Jazwareâs new line of smiling fruit and vexing bombs with game sound effects based on the best-selling app game. (Available in spring)
