New Avengers poster shows the not-so-super side of its superheroes

Paramount is doing a halfway decent job of promoting its big 2012 Marvel event movie. We say halfway because the first trailer for Joss Whedon's superhero jamboree was full of terrific. But that Entertainment Weekly cover was a Photoshop nightmare. And now comes a promo poster that doesn't do anyone any favors.

It's kind of a "let's just stack everyone up in front of some weird-ass gold mountain" motif, with a couple of jets and sparks thrown in for good measure. I'll bet someone used the entire box of colored pencils, too.

Maybe this is a prototype, or something that's only supposed to be released overseas, in countries where the populace generally has poor eyesight. Or maybe The Avengers is simply better sold with moving pictures. Can't be sure.

Perhaps Marvel Studios should turn to the guys at Marvel Comics—who have some experience putting superheroes in poses that don't look silly—and get out of the way.
