He may play Iron Man on the big screen, but Robert Downey Jr. is definitely human. The action star was injured on set Wednesday, and production has been shut down temporarily on the upcoming Iron Man 3.
Downey hurt his ankle while filming a stunt for the sequel, which will follow the nanotech Extremis storyline introduced in the comic run. It doesn't seem to be too serious, and Marvel issued a short statement saying things should be back up and running following a short delay:
Robert Downey Jr. sustained an ankle injury on the set of Iron Man 3 in Wilmington, North Carolina while performing a stunt. There will be a short delay in the production schedule while he recuperates.
Downey is known for wanting to push his limits, and we're glad to hear it was only a minor injury. He better be careful—Avengers 2 will probably ramp up soon after Iron Man 3 winds down. So save some of that spunk for the next one.
The sequel is being written and directed by Shane Black and stars Downey, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jon Favreau, Don Cheadle, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, James Badge Dale and Ashley Hamilton.
The studio is eyeing a May 3, 2013, release date.
