Whedon 'torn' over directing Avengers 2? But—why?

In the weeks since Joss Whedon's The Avengers became one of the biggest hits in box-office history, we've all been wondering whether the uber-director would be coming back for part two. Well, according to Whedon himself, he's still pretty "torn" on the prospect.

In a sit-down with Hero Complex, Whedon talked about just how big an undertaking a film of that scope is, and how much it takes out of you creatively—especially when you're playing in someone else's sandbox.

"You know, I'm very torn," Whedon said. "It's an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else's story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it."

For Whedon, that reaction makes a lot of sense. He's made his career as a world-builder, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Firefly, spinning his own mythos and ideas into his projects. Tackling something as controlled as the Marvel Cinematic Universe was definitely a different animal, with a lot more hands stirring the pot.

Luckily for us, the draw of getting to play with Earth's Mightiest Heroes again might just be too much for Whedon to pass up—reservations or not.

"But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas," Whedon said of Avengers 2. "And they all seem really cool."

Sound off: Would you like to see a new director take the reins, or keep Whedon in the saddle?
