That Primeval spinoff just nabbed Vampire Diaries, Eureka stars

That new North American spinoff of the dino-chasing U.K. series Primeval will apparently feature quite a few familiar faces.

Eureka's Niall Matter (Zane) and Vampire Diaries' Sara Canning (Jenna) are both set to star in Primeval: New World, which finished shooting this month in Vancouver. The creators have kept news about the 13-episode series under wraps, and casting details weren't even known until The Hollywood Reporter got hold of this info.

Matter's character is described as an "inventor and visionary hero" (that kind of plays into his Eureka role, at least the inventor part), while Canning will serve as a "predator attack expert."

The time-hopping action drama--which will hopefully help fill that Terra Nova-sized void in your heart--is set to debut later this year in the U.K. and Canada, though the U.S. rights are still up in the air.

The show is being pitched as a darker, hipper take on the original series, with a younger cast and more mature storylines (a la Torchwood, perhaps?), with lots of crossover potential.

Sci-fi fans should also find a lot to love behind the camera, as Sanctuary and Stargate alum Amanda Tapping has signed on to direct some episodes, while longtime Stargate directors Martin Wood and Andy Mikita are also involved.
