News briefs: Potter's $100m; Twilight's new hunk

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince exceeded the $100 million mark at the worldwide box office in its first 24 hours of release, Variety reported; the sixth installment in the hit franchise took in $58.2 million domestically and $45.9 million internationally for a total tally of $104 million, the best start ever for the franchise.

The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Biz blog reports that unknown Australian actor Xavier Samuel has landed the first new role in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third film in the hit franchise; Samuels will play the role of a "newborn vampire" named Riley who joins the plot of villain Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre) to murder protagonist Bella (Kristen Stewart).

Empire magazine has posted a new trailer for the upcoming thriller Triangle, starring Melissa George, which opens Oct. 16.

Jeff Wadlow will direct Arena, a sci-fi action film for Summit, about a group of modern-day soldiers transported to a shifting landscape, where they are forced to face off against the best warriors from different eras in gladitorial battle, according to The Hollywood Reporter; new writers Toby Wagstaff and Darren Howell wrote the screenplay, which Summit optioned in April 2008.

Warner Home Video will release the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: 25th Anniversary Collector's Edition on Blu-ray and DVD on Aug. 11 in sets that will include all four feature films.
