Director Rob Marshall reveals more of the Pirates 4 plot

If you've seen the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie, At World's End, you know that Captain Jack Sparrow fled to seek the Fountain of Youth. Good news: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall now reveals what happens next.

"It doesn't start on a ship, it doesn't start in the Caribbean. The first act is in London," Marshall told the L.A. Times. He goes on to say that Jack escapes the king and is captured. (If you've seen the trailer, you know Jack is behind bars at some point. We can venture a guess it takes place in the beginning of the movie.)

Marshall said:

"There's a big carriage chase—you saw some of that in the trailer, he jumps from carriage to carriage—and then he gets kidnapped. Prior to that he meets Penelope Cruz's character and they have a love-hate thing and, we find out, that it goes back years."

Marshall's words seem a bit scattered. Does he mean Jack meets Penelope Cruz's character (her name is Angelica, according to the film's IMDB page) before he escapes London? But if their relationship goes back years, we can assume we'll see a flashback or two.

The second act of On Stranger Tides introduces Blackbeard, the famed pirate. Marshall calls him "incredibly evil and the scariest villain in the movies so far." Because Blackbeard is played by Ian McShane (who wowed us with his brutality in Deadwood and made our skin crawl with his sinister performance in Pillars of the Earth), we believe McShane can out-evil Davy Jones and Barbossa.

And speaking of Barbossa, he's working for the British crown and captains an official navy ship.

The third act of the movie is the hunt for the Fountain of Youth itself, set in the jungles of the Caribbean. We know from the trailer that the jungles are full of perils, including mermaids, who, according to Marshall, "feed on ... the men, and that's how they see men, as something that sustains them." (The pirates must capture a mermaid, because mermaids' tears are somehow necessary to jump-start the Fountain of Youth, although Marshall doesn't go into details.)

Although we know some plot specifics, knowing more just creates more questions: How do Jack and Angelica know each other? How did Jack wind up in England? And the most important question of all, when do Elizabeth and Will get screen time?

We'll get the answers we crave on May 20, 2011.
