Ian McKellan's as shocked as you are about X-Men return

This week, Bryan Singer announced big news about X-Men: Days of Future Past—he confirmed that both Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart would appear in the upcoming sequel. And no one was as shocked about their return as the actors themselves.

Shortly after the news broke, McKellen spoke about reprising his role as the supervillian.

"What a gas! I mean, Patrick Stewart and I have just been playing Waiting for Godot throughout England and in the West End of London. So, we've stayed in touch. We can't believe it [laughs]," he exclaimed.

"I thought these were Fassbender and McAvoy's parts, but—no, no—we're back," McKellen joked. "We'll give them a run for their money. I mean, I haven't read the script, so I don't know how much we've got to do. But, to be back in that world, and for Bryan to be doing it—with all the success he's had in the meantime—it's wonderful. Wonderful."

Speaking of their younger counterparts, McKellen went on to praise Fassbender's interpretation of Magneto. He called his performance "first class." He continued, "I thought he was better than me."

As McKellen said, we're not sure how large their parts he will be. But when time travel's involved, anything is possible.
