Say it ain't so! Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has just announced that everyone's favorite couple in the TARDIS and Who companions Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) are set to leave Matt Smith's Time Lord next season. Ruining Xmas much?
The sad announcement was made by Moffat at the BBC TV Centre in London at a screening for the upcoming Christmas episode ''The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe,'' which is set to air on Christmas Day.
"The final days of the Ponds are coming," Moffat said. "I'm not telling you when or how, but that story is going to come to a heartbreaking end."
Wait! Heartbreaking end? What on Earth can you mean, Mr. Moffat? We're not sure we're liking the sound of that.
Steven Moffat also added that the Doctor was going to meet "a new friend." The role has apparently not yet been cast.
About Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill's departure from the series next year, Matt Smith said:
"We had the most incredible journey. We took over the show, and we've really had to hold hands and help each other through it.
"So it's very disappointing, but one has to remember that this show is about change and regeneration, and that's what galvanizes it and pushes it forwards."
And here we were, really getting to love the Ponds, Doctor Who's first married couple in the TARDIS ever. We'll be sad to see them go. How about you?
