Rumor of the Day: Abrams has ALREADY found his new Khan!

J.J. Abrams isn't wasting any time: Now that Benicio Del Toro won't play the villain in Star Trek 2, the director has reportedly already lined up another choice.

Sources have told Variety that Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez is Abrams' pick to replace Del Toro, who dropped out of the picture last week when salary negotiations broke down. Ramirez, who's not widely known to American audiences, blew critics away as the international terrorist Carlos the Jackal in the miniseries Carlos. He's also been in Che, Domino and The Bourne Ultimatum, and will show up as Ares, the god of war, in next year's Wrath of the Titans.

The villain in Star Trek 2, of course, is believed to be Khan Noonien Singh from the original series episode "Space Seed" and the film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, where he was played by Ricardo Montalban. (So much for getting an actual Indian actor to play a Sikh character, we guess ...)

Ramirez was supposed to test for the role over Skype either today or tomorrow, and there's still scheduling issues to work out if he gets it. Abrams is supposedly also looking at Jordi Molla, who starred in Colombiana.

Either way, he has to make a decision fast, since production on the May 17, 2013 release gets going next month. The crew from Abrams' 2009 Star Trek will all be back, along with new additions Alice Eve and Peter "RoboCop" Weller, who Entertainment Weekly says is playing a CEO of some kind. Do they still have corporations in this Star Trek timeline?
