Robert Downey Jr. really, really likes the Iron Man 3 script

We don't know much about Iron Man 3 yet. It's still a year and a half away, so, right now, we're basically just hoping it won't end up like Iron Man 2. Well, star Robert Downey Jr. knows a thing or two, and while he's not ready to spill plot details, he did say that Drew Pearce's screenplay is the best thing he's read in five years.

In an interview promoting Sherlock Holmes: A Game of a Shadows that also included talk about his second child and (of course) The Avengers, Downey said he has high hopes for the movie that will spring from Pearce's script, and even compared it to the much-loved original Iron Man flick.

"Iron Man 3 is probably the best script I've read in five years, which is so funny," he said. "I mean, things have come so full circle that a genre superhero movie can actually be the most artistic bit of writing I read. But I think The Avengers is something a lot of the fans are really looking forward to, so I'm excited about that. The third Iron Man, to me, is an opportunity to go back to the kind of storytelling and character exploration that made the first one good."

Again, no plot details, but there's no doubt he's in love with this script. It's a good sign for Pearce, who's quickly becoming one of the hottest genre writers in Hollywood. Just a couple of years ago, his biggest work was the British TV superhero comedy No Heroics. Now he's writing Iron Man 3 and he's attached to work on Marvel's Runaways movie and Sherlock Holmes 3.

Shane Black, who worked with Downey on Kiss Kiss Bang Bang back in 2005, is set to start shooting the third Tony Stark flick early next year in North Carolina. Tony himself will have to deal with The Avengers before he goes back to getting his own spotlight, but at least now we've got some indication that we can expect something better from the Iron Man franchise in 2013.
