1st poster from The Hobbit turns us all into Bilbo

The trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey didn't just meet our every expectation about the upcoming Peter Jackson film ... what with old friends returning and meeting new ones, it exceeded it. We're happy to say the same is true for the poster.

The poster is simple enough. Bilbo, facing away from us, steps out beyond the door of his home, Bag End. In the foreground, we have Bilbo's lovely home, and in the distance, we see the Shire and beyond. This image implies that a larger world lies beyond the boundaries of what Bilbo knows. It tells us that both we and Bilbo Baggins are in for one serious adventure.

It's a very simple and very powerful image. Frankly, it's one of the best posters of the year.

We also love how it harkens back to a photo of Jackson, below, released earlier this year, when production of the film began.

The Hobbit: AUJ won't be in theaters until Dec. 14, 2012, another—let's see ... there are 366 days in a leap year, minus seven days, oh gods—359 days. At least we have the poster, the trailer and, of course, the book to keep us company until then.
