1st Game of Thrones season 2 footage reveals some new characters

We've still got a while to wait before Game of Thrones kicks off its second season next spring, but HBO has decided to torture us even further with a couple of minutes of tantalizing behind-the-scenes footage. Among the highlights: new characters, new crowns for new kings, and old characters in new trouble.

The two-minute clip, titled Game of Thrones: In Production, features discussion about the second season from executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with brief but intriguing glimpses at the new season's expanding world.

"The challenge of this show is you constantly get to realize new places and you constantly get to round out the world and give a much greater sense of the complexity of the world the story takes place in," Weiss said of the growing Westeros landscape, which this year will include much more of the Seven Kingdoms as the war that touched off in season one deepens.

Among the familiar faces are Peter Dinklage as Tyrion "The Imp" Lannister and Charles Dance as his father Tywin, along with Kit Harington as Jon Snow and John Bradley as Samwell Tarly, venturing together into territory beyond the Wall. We also get to see Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) with a new, rougher hairdo as she begins her flight from King's Landing, and Renly Baratheon (Gethin Anthony) sporting a brand-new shiny crown. Some new characters also make their appearance, most notably Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer), Renly's fiancée.

It's not much (yet), but it is a chance to peer into a world we're looking forward to revisiting in all its barbaric glory when Game of Thrones returns in April, and it comes with a promise from the producers that season two will be even more compelling than season one.

"So many great character arcs and so many great characters and plot twists and reveals, and I think it's going to be an incredible journey for our audience," Benioff said.
