River Phoenix's apocalyptic final film surfaces after 18 years

When the Oscar-nominated actor died of a drug overdose at 23, he left behind an astounding body of work—including films like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Stand by Me and Sneakers—as well an unfinished movie called Dark Blood. Now Dark Blood is being prepped for release.

For 18 years Dutch director George Sluizer has been holding on to the Dark Blood footage he shot with Phoenix, keeping it hidden after the young actor died. But now he wants to finish the film and enlist River's brother Joaquin to help with a voiceover that'll tie the loose plot threads together.

As described by The Hollywood Reporter, Dark Blood has Phoenix playing a hermit living in the desert on a nuclear testing site as he waits for the end of the world. When a Hollywood jet-set couple (Judy Davis and Jonathan Pryce) arrives to find shelter, he begins a troubled relationship with the wife.

Will Dark Blood be any good or will it simply be a curio, a pale reminder of what could've been had Phoenix not died so young? Only time will tell.
