The idea of watching countless hours of Doctor Who, Star Trek and Warehouse 13 sounds like a sci-fi nerd's dream. Unfortunately, we just found another study that confirms what our moms have been telling us for years. TV is a killer (sort of).
Do you remember when you were a kid and your parents would complain about you watching too much television? They knew something was wrong, and they were trying to give us a heads-up on the dangers of sitting in front of the boob tube all day.
A new study from Australian researchers claims that for people over 25, every hour of television watched takes 22 minutes off their life. Dun! Dun! Dun!
"As a rule, the more time we spend watching TV, the more time we spend eating mindlessly in front of the TV, and the less time we spend being physically active," explained Dr. David L. Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine to HealthDay.com. "More eating and less physical activity, in turn, mean greater risk for obesity, and the chronic diseases it tends to anticipate, notably diabetes, heart disease and cancer."
In other words, mindless television watching keeps you from leading an active and healthy life. These days, that should be common knowledge, but who knew they could narrow down the exact number of minutes lost? That's kind of creepy.
Out of the entire study, the most unnerving statement the scientists released was this: "The statistics suggest that too much TV may be as dangerous as smoking and lack of exercise in reducing life expectancy."
Smoking? Really? We don't know about that one. What do you guys think? Is that Torchwood marathon really worth dying for?
