Rumor of the Day: Marvel's making a Guardians of the Galaxy movie

Marvel's feeling the wind at their backs with a trilogy of successful films this summer and Avengers on the way next year. They're feeling so good, in fact, that we've heard they're thinking of another major superhero team they'd like to bring to the big screen—the Guardians of the Galaxy.

You might be asking yourself, "Who?" Don't worry. We'll fill you in.

The original team was established in 1969 as a group of aliens, all the last of their kind, who united to protect the universe from a race of reptilian aliens called the Badoon. The Badoon wanted to (surprise, surprise) conquer Earth's solar system. During their storied history, the Guardians of the Galaxy traveled in time to the 20th century, where they teamed up with Captain America and the Thing. Defeating the Badoon, they moved on to face a nearly invincible enemy, Korvac, which teamed them up with the Avengers.

Since then, a brand-new Guardians of the Galaxy has formed, which features a whole new cast of cosmic heroes. The faces are different, but the mission of proactively defending other solar systems from danger is essentially the same.

It's difficult to say which version Marvel might use in a feature film, but our best guess would be the original team, considering their connection with the Avengers.

Apparently Marvel's Kevin Feige is an unabashed fan of the Guardians of the Galaxy and has been hoping to bring them into the limelight for quite some time. It looks like they'll be getting an appearance in the upcoming second season of the animated Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Maybe Marvel is considering that to be a little flight test to see whether young fans will connect with these otherworldly characters.

Make no mistake—this is a big risk for Marvel, considering how unknown the team is and how much money a film like this would be likely to cost. We have to wonder if there's a chance we'll see them make a cameo of some kind in the Avengers movie next summer. We've heard the Skrulls might be there, too, so cosmic superheroes are not totally out of the question.

Time travel, epic battles with monstrous alien races—it could be a lot of fun. The question is, will audiences latch onto alien characters as they did with Star Wars? Or are the Guardians of the Galaxy destined to crash and burn the way this summer's Green Lantern did?
