Charlaine Harris: 13th Sookie Stackhouse novel will be the last

Charlaine Harris has announced that she will soon put an end to telepathic-slash-fairy waitress Sookie Stackhouse's vamp-filled supernatural adventures with book 13—which will leave a lot of soon-to-be-bereaved fans with only two more books to sink their teeth into before they'll have to say goodbye to the characters of Bon Temps.

"I'm writing Book Twelve and then there will be Book Thirteen. And then I'll think of something else new and wonderful to do," Harris has revealed to PopcornBiz.

She also explained her decision:

"I think it'll be total closure. I don't go back to things once I've finished them. That's kind of what I do. I don't want to write Sookie after I get stale. Yeah, I'll miss them, I'm sure, because I have lived with them for quite a long time—12 years now. And it did take two years to sell the first book. But I think writers like to do different things. At least this writer does."

Fans of the hit HBO series True Blood (which is based on the novels) shouldn't worry too much yet: Book Eleven, Dead Reckoning, has just been released this past May, and with 13 books (to be soon) in print, there's still a lot of Sookie stories (like Quinn and loads of near-death beatings) for creator Alan Ball and HBO to tell—even though the vamp supernatural drama and the books have become their own beasts.

(True Blood is currently in its fourth season, which is based on the fourth Sookie Stackhouse novel, Dead to the World. A fifth season is already planned.)

Charlaine Harris is also currently working on a graphic novel titled Cemetery Girl alongside Christopher Golden, who's most commonly known as the guy who's written a bunch of original novels based on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series.

Are you saddened by that news? Do you think it's proper to end the series with Book Thirteen? And how do you think Charlaine Harris will ultimately end Sookie's story: Will she get a happily-ever-after with Eric? Will she reunite with Bill? Will she get it on with Alcide? Or will she end up alone, her own woman, à la Ugly Betty?
