Eliza Dushku and Katee Sackhoff rock the Batman: Year One teaser

When you decide to attempt a shot-for-shot re-creation of (arguably) the most important Batman story ever, it's time to bring out the big guns.  DC Animated has done exactly that, especially when it comes to its female leads.

Year One isn't just the origin story for Batman. It's a harrowing trip into the sinful past of Jim Gordon and Selina Kyle, too. That's part of what makes it so important. It reshaped the way we defined the world of Gotham City, and it informed so much of what Christopher Nolan would go on to do with Batman Begins.

So if you're going to take all that on, you had better bring a certain pedigree. Bruce Timm (a true master of the Dark Knight in his own right) decided he wasn't going to mess around with his casting.

Catwoman is the definitive silver-tongued bad girl with a rough-and-tumble past. Who do you cast for that sort of role? Eliza Dushku, who else? She might have played vulnerable and crazy as Echo in Joss Whedon's Dollhouse, but can you think of any badder bad girl than Faith the Vampire Slayer? Catwoman feels like the role Dushku was born to play.

Meanwhile, Jim Gordon (as played by the great Bryan Cranston) is getting extramarital with a fellow officer. Tough girl who has a knack for stealing the boys away? Hmm ... pretty sure that'd be Katee Sackhoff. If her turn as Kara "Starbuck" Thrace in Battlestar Galactica doesn't convince you she's perfect for the part, then nothing will.

There's so much expectation here. Between Frank Miller's writing and David Mazzucchelli's art, it's hard to believe an animated film could ever do the source material justice. With a team like this, though, it'll be exciting to see them try.
