Scary viral video tries to warn us about the Rise of the Apes

Twentieth Century Fox is using academic scare tactics to promote Rise of the Planet of the Apes. They've released a new viral video that shows exactly how and why monkeys are better than us—at everything!

The footage in this behavioral video is supposedly taken from the Primate Research Institute at Kyoto University. It features several chimpanzees who are engaged in a short-term memory test. It asks them to identify and remember patterns of numbers flashed on a screen for less than a second.

While the chimps tested consistently got 10 out of 10 numbers right, humans couldn't remember more than six. Aside from strength and agility, this is another area they seem to surpass us in. We wonder how memory will be used in their fight to take over the planet?

This video is just one in a series that has been released highlighting apes' mental and physical prowess. They might be marketing Rise of the Planet of the Apes in this way to make the premise seem more realistic. They want to instill real fear in us. They want us to believe that if given a little push, monkeys could overpower us. Well, are you buying what they're selling?

Rise of the Planet of the Apes opens in theaters everywhere on Aug. 5.
