Brent Spiner, who played the beloved android Lt. Commander Data on seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation and in four subsequent films, needs your help. He wants you to get him cast in J.J. Abrams' next Star Trek sequel—but as Data, or as someone else?
During a very long live webchat (it's over an hour, but one never gets bored when Brent Spiner's talking) back on Monday in order to promote his new webseries called Fresh Hell, Spiner took time to chat about all things Star Trek, and also took the time to do a bit of lobbying to get himself cast in the next Star Trek film.
Yesterday, Trek Movie reported on the most interesting tidbits coming out of all this, including whether or not the actor would play Data again, whom he thinks should now play the character in a hypothetical Next Generation reboot/remake (we're all for that but minus the lens flares, please). His suggestions included Thor's Tom Hiddleston, who played Loki, and Justin Bieber (this is Spiner's typical brand of humor at play here with the Bieber thing, obviously, but Hiddleston would be awesome).
This is when Spiner jumped on the self-lobbying waggon:
I am thinking more about the next Star Trek movie and more about who can I be in it. I did this character Arik Soong [on Star Trek Enterprise], not to be confused with Dr. Soong on the [TNG], this was his predecessor. And I would like to start a campaign, maybe right here tonight, its called BBS—Bring Back Soong. And I want you to flood JJ Abrams offices with that: BBS, Bring Back Soong.
When asked about whether or not the actor would consider playing Data again, though, Spiner said:
I don't think that could happen. Look at me. I am a shockingly older gentleman. I don't see that I could wear that makeup anymore. I think that would look really stupid. I love the character and I wish I started it much younger, but I was already in my mid sixties when I started [joke]. I just don't think I could get away with it. Yeah they could CGI it, but why not just CGI the whole character and forget about me.
So no Data, but getting Arik Soong on board the Enterprise again with the new cast and crew is not impossible. And with William Shatner recently confirming he wont be on board the next Star Trek sequel, Spiner's involvement in the film would certainly thrill many Trek fans.
So what do you think? Will you be on board Brent Spiner's Bring Back Soong campaign? And do you think the character should/could appear in any capacity on the next Star Trek film?
