Who will be the ONE new mutant in the X-Men: First Class sequel?

What happens when a superhero movie gets rave reviews before it's even in theaters? Why, people start asking about a sequel, naturally. So—is there one being planned or not?

Well, I believe it was Socrates who said it best when he declared, "Duh!" Yes, there will be a sequel, but that's not the big news. No. The big news is that, in addition to the already substantial stable of mutants, there will be one more major character appearing in the next film.

According to Matthew Vaughn over at Movie Web:

"We will only have one more new character. I won't say who he ...I won't say who he or she is! But we will only be bringing one more new character in. Because, I think, as Professor X is in a wheelchair, Magneto needs to have a nemesis he can fight with. Someone that will be his equal. I know who it is. It would be nice if I could say something, but I can't, mate!"

The question of the day is—who is it? Here, in no particular order, are our top five possible candidates.

Scott Summers is more than just a pretty face and an optic blast, he's also often the leader of the X-Men. While earlier X-movies relegated him to being the jealous, arrogant boyfriend type, we think it would be much more interesting to show how he became top dog. Maybe the sequel could tell that story. He might not be the intellectual equal of Magneto, but he does have the ability to bring together the best group of mutants in history. Plus, he blasts a super-powerful beam out of his eyes. Why aren't people impressed by this?

Jean Grey

Sure, Vaughn seemed to hint that the new character would be a fella, but we'd like to think he might have been throwing fans off on purpose. Jean Grey, being both telepathic and telekinetic, would make an excellent candidate. We know she joined up with Professor X very early on, and we know that she is incredibly powerful. She is, in essence, Xavier minus the wheelchair plus some sexy red hair. Could be a winner.

And while we're considering women, why not consider one of the other leaders of the X-Men? Storm controls the weather so well that she can use it to make her fly. Heck, if you go by the '90s cartoon, she can magically make her costume appear over her body. Why? Who cares! She's awesome and very, very powerful. It would be fantastic to dig into her backstory as an orphan and a thief with a tragic past. Plus, we'd love to get the taste of Halle Berry's performance out of our mouths.

Now, some of you might assume that someone who would go against Magneto would have to be one of the good guys. We think it's just as possible that we could be introduced instead to another villain with an even more heinous agenda. Enter Apocalypse. Powerful beyond reason and, well ... completely beyond reason. He doesn't care what you believe, he only cares that the strongest survive. He's all about thinning the herd and controlling the best of what remains. Hey, he's called Apocalypse after all. We could easily see Magneto and Xavier teaming up to fight against a stronger foe.

Does this man need introducing? He's old, he's hairy, he's Canadian, and he's got nigh-indestructible claws. Considering that this franchise is about young mutants and their origins, you might think old Wolvie might be an unlikely choice. The truth is, though, that he could have met all these characters in his past before the whole "adamantium memory loss" thing. Moreover, he's Wolverine—probably the most famous and beloved mutant in Marvel history. His showing up is only a matter of time.

That's our list. What about you? Who do you think will turn up on the First Class sequel?
