1st trailer for Another Earth shames sci-fi's summer blockbusters

While parallel Earths may seem like well-trod ground (and they are), Another Earth looks like it might not only be the surprise hit of the summer, it might also leave Green Lantern, Thor and Captain America in the dust.

The last three movies will likely be light on heart and heavy on heart-exploding action, but Another Earth looks to tug the heart strings and maybe play a few mind games in the process.

Here's how the story is described:

"Rhoda Williams, a bright young woman recently accepted into MIT's astrophysics program, aspires to explore the cosmos. John Burroughs, a brilliant composer, has just reached the pinnacle of his profession, and is about to have a second child with his loving wife. On the eve of the discovery of a duplicate Earth, tragedy strikes, and the lives of these strangers become irrevocably intertwined. Estranged from the world and the selves they once knew, the two outsiders begin an unlikely love affair, which reawakens them to life. But when one of them is presented with the opportunity to travel to the other Earth and embrace an alternative reality, which new life will they choose?"

The film wasn't on anyone's radar when it premiered at Sundance. It was, after all, conceived by two relative unknowns (Mike Cahill and star Brit Marling). Cahill, a documentarian, and Marling, an investment-banking analyst, took the festival by storm.

Handling almost every aspect of production themselves (writing, directing and editing), Cahill and Marling made Another Earth as low-budget as it could be, but you'd never know looking at it. The trailer is stark and chilling, the acting understated, and it's the perfect cure for the "action-packed summer" blues.

Could it be a sleeper hit like Primer or Pi before it? See the trailer for yourself and let us know what you think.

You'll be able to catch Another Earth in limited release on July 22.
