Ron Moore's new 17th Precinct cast member: Smallville's Lana Lang

The cast list for the pilot of Ron Moore's fantasy-based police procedural 17th Precinct reads like a Battlestar Galactica reunion, with Jamie Bamber, Tricia Helfer and James Callis in starring roles. But the most recently named cast member didn't come from the cast of Galactica. Instead, her sci-fi cred comes by way of Smallville.

Kristin Kreuk—who also starred in The Legend of Earthsea and appeared in four episodes of Chuck—will play Susan Longstreet, the wife of Jamie Bamber's character, Caolan. Currently, she has "guest star" status, but if the pilot is expanded into a series, her role could be expanded as well.

17th Precinct is a fantasy AND a police procedural, described by Moore as "an adult Harry Potter." But instead of fighting the evil Lord Voldemort, the characters will be fighting crime.

Only with the perfect storm of advertising budget, star power and an available timeslot do executives turn a pilot into a TV show (akin to a lowly government bill being told, "Now you're a law!" "Oh, yes!"). We're hoping that advance interest, such as the kind we're generating now, might sway some executive's decision toward 17th Precinct and away from some other show that doesn't have Kristin Kreuk and a chunk of the Battlestar Galactica cast in it. Oh yes!
