Rumor of the Day: A Justice League movie is coming in 2013

A recent interview with Warner Brothers' chief movie executive intimated that, after Green Lantern, Batman and Superman run the cinematic gauntlet, the studio will finally team their DC Comics heavyweights for one big, honking flick.

Given the success with which Marvel has erected its superheroic movie machine—with each standalone movie dovetailing with the next, all building toward The Avengers—fans have been wondering when DC and Warner would follow suit. And they almost did, back in 2007: Road Warrior director George Miller was lined up to put Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and company through their paces, but it was sidelined thanks to a reportedly weak script and the WGA writers' strike.

But a recent L.A. Times profile of Jeff Robinov, president of Warner Brothers' motion picture group, snuck in the following information:

"[Robinov's] most immediate hurdle is filling the void that will be left this summer when the multibillion-dollar Harry Potter series shepherded by Horn ends. Robinov is betting on DC Comics characters to take center stage starting in June with the $200-million-plus production Green Lantern.

He's then aiming to release new Batman and Superman films in 2012 and Justice League, a teaming of DC's top heroes, in 2013.

Now, that information isn't in a direct quote from Robinov's words, but rather a summation by the profile's writer, Ben Fritz. But I can't imagine that the L.A. Times' research department—or Warner Brothers—would allow fallacious information of this magnitude to see print.

As for whether Christian Bale will see more time in the Batsuit, Robinov expressed a desire to reboot Batman almost immediately after The Dark Knight Rises: "Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what the next phase is."

So, while it's almost a lock that Henry Cavill's Superman will lead DC's finest, it's entirely possible that Justice League will get a new Caped Crusader.
