Australian actor Chris Hemsworth wanted so much to look the part of Thor after he was cast in the role that he began an ambitious training regimen to make himself as big as possible. He packed on so much muscle, in fact, that he could no longer fit into his costume.
Hemsworth told Hero Complex this week that when he landed the starring role in this summer's Marvel Studios epic, Thor, he immediately began looking at the comics to get a sense of just how massive the Asgardian was. But he soon realized that looking just like the God of Thunder in the comics was a little out of his reach.
He explained, "The guy is 500 pounds or something and looks like Schwarzenegger. And I thought, 'OK, I'm not gonna get to that. But I have to get bigger.'"
The young actor said he was encouraged by studio execs to "get as big as you can," but the plan ended up backfiring: "I came back right before Christmas (2009), just before we started the movie, and had a final sort of camera test and put the costume on, and within a couple of minutes, my hands started going numb. ... I started getting pins and needles, and you'd touch the skin and the blood wouldn't return to that area so quick. And I thought, 'OK, it doesn't fit.'"
Hemsworth ended up backing off on the workouts at the request of director Kenneth Branagh, and the costume was altered as well. The bottom line is that the actor still looks formidable on screen, and he's already back at his workouts again, with filming slated to start this spring on 2012's The Avengers. Meanwhile, Thor comes out on May 6 of this year, and everyone will then get a chance to see just how well Hemsworth fills out Thor's legendary armor.
Do you think Hemsworth looks massive enough as Thor in the photos and trailers you've seen?
