Why Colin Farrell hoped he wouldn't like the Fright Night remake

When Colin Farrell signed on to play über-sexy vampire Jerry Dandridge in the upcoming Fright Night remake, the actor most likely knew he would have big shoes to fill — after all, Chris Sarandon OOZED sex in the original horror/comedy. A fan of the original, he also hoped he wouldn't like the script for the remake. But as it so happens, he did.

In an interview for MTV, Farrell revealed that he DID have reservations about doing the remake to the VERY popular 1985 film (it even has a yearly convention!), because the Irish actor is quite a fan of the original:

I mean, I loved the original, and I hope the film is — on it's own — entertaining and works. Because I really did love the original, so much so that — as I've said — I was hoping I wouldn't like the remake when I read it, because I didn't want to have to answer questions about remakes and lack of originality and all that s---. I didn't want to think of myself in those terms either, so I was hoping that I didn't like it. But read it and I'm an actor and I loved it and I went, 'OK, let's go to work.'

Farrell also talked about how close the Fright Night remake was to the 1985 film:

I mean, it's close enough in structure and story [to the original], but there are some things that have been changed. Peter Vincent's a lot younger, and what he does has kind of been put into a very contemporary setting. There are some changes.

And boy, do we know how different Peter Vincent is in his new, younger incarnation, played by David Tennant. The original Peter Vincent, who was played by the late Roddy McDowall, was an older, washed-up horror movie host who looked a bit like Sherlock Holmes. Tennant's Vincent looks more like he was modeled on Criss Angel and also happens to be a master of illusion with a Las Vegas act.

Fright Night also stars Anton Yelchin, Toni Colette, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Imogen Poots and Dave (brother of James) Franco. It will be coming to theaters on Aug. 19, 2011.

Are you excited about seeing the Fright Night remake? Do you think Colin Farrell will make a great Jerry Dandrige?
