Mark Ruffalo is actually LOSING weight to play the Hulk

His Avengers co-star Chris Hemsworth may have packed on the pounds to play the Asgardian god of thunder, but Mark Ruffalo is heading in the other direction for his debut as the Hulk's alter ego, Bruce Banner.

Ruffalo, the latest actor to play the not-so-jolly green giant, was asked by Collider what he was doing to get ready for the role. While Hemsworth recently revealed that his workout regimen actually made him too big for his costume, Ruffalo explained:

"I've lost 15 pounds. They don't want me all ripped up, but they want me to be lean and mean. It's about trying to get the psychology of somebody who knows, at any moment, they could literally tear the roof off of wherever they are and trying to bring something real to that and totally fantastic."

Of course, Ruffalo doesn't need to bulk up to play the nerdy Bruce Banner, and the Hulk will be created through CG, for which Ruffalo may or may not perform the motion capture himself.

The Oscar-nominated actor said that he and the other cast members are "working on the script" with writer/director Joss Whedon and will begin shooting in the first week of May, adding, "Hopefully we'll have the mother of all comic-book movies for you soon."

Do you think Whedon, Hemsworth, a "lean and mean" Ruffalo and the rest can deliver "the mother of all comic-book movies" in 2012?
