So THAT'S the plot to the new Asteroids movie?

In its push to scoop up properties that play on nostalgia, Universal won a bidding war over the film rights to the classic Atari videogame a couple of years ago—around the same time they snapped up Battleship. Now word has slipped out about exactly what an Asteroids movie could look like.

And, judging by the description in The Hollywood Reporter, which announced that Snow White and the Hunstman writer Evan Spiliotopoulos is "adapting" Asteroids, it's a bit of a puzzler:

"The plotline for the film adaptation has evolved into the story of two estranged brothers that must team up to save Earth from an alien race."

I mean, sure, that's a movie I'd watch. I like aliens and I like brothers—but that's a movie you could've made without buying the rights to a videogame (one that had no discernible story, given all you did was, you know, shoot asteroids). Still, I bet at one point during Asteroids, the aliens hurl giant, well, asteroids at Earth and the brothers have to get in fighters and shoot the, yes, asteroids out of the sky.

In case you forgot, here's what Asteroids gameplay looked like:

Oh, Hollywood ... you do love to spend your money, don't you?
