12 strikingly similar posters spotlight a sci-fi movie cliche

When the Thor poster broke on the internets Thursday, we were astonished by two things: how rad Chris Hemsworth and his giant hammer looked and how familiar the image was. Here are 12 movie posters that feature a hero glancing behind him, or her, ready for action.

It's not a new design ethos, nor is it a purely genre-related one, either. As New York Magazine points out, the hero checking his back-weapon-in-hand poster pose is big with westerns, like Unforgiven, and action flicks, like Shoot 'Em Up. But this new wave of men and women in costumes, more often than not with something shiny in their hands, is beginning to smack a bit of cliche.
