Harry Potter about to dethrone Star Wars as biggest film franchise

By the time Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 runs its course, and makes its forecasted boatload of cash, the boy wizard saga will surpass the boy Jedi saga.

As it stands, George Lucas' sci-fi odyssey is the reigning box office champ; the six films together have grossed $1.9 billion in the U.S. alone, while the Potter adaptations have brought in $1.7 billion. But young Harry still has two more films in the pipeline, and, if one is to look at the $285 million average gross for each Potter movie, it's clear that Star Wars isn't long for the top of the list. Heck, Star Wars'll get kicked to the curb by Deathly Hallows Part 1, leaving Part 2 to provide a cushion for Potter's lead.

Of course, Lucas will get another chance at number one with the saga's 3-D theatrical re-release starting in 2012—and, not to be counted out of the billion-dollar conversation, James Cameron's got two more Avatar movies on the horizon.
