Teri Hatcher to play Lois Lane's mom on Smallville

Smallville's Lois Lane is tough-talking, hard-drinking, and good in a fight ... traits she likely picked up from her father, the General. However, not much is known about the Daily Planet reporter's mother, other than that she died when Lois was 6.

Happily, Lois will get to confront this particular ghost—psychological or otherwise—in an upcoming episode. And best of all, the very sexy Teri Hatcher took the role of Ella Lane.

According to the Ausiello Files:

Congrats, Smallville—you have outdone yourself! For the show's 10th and final season, producers have scored perhaps their biggest (maybe even the biggest possible) casting coup: They've snagged erstwhile Lois Lane Teri Hatcher to play mom to Erica Durance's Lois Lane! ... In episode 8, titled "Abandoned," Lois discovers old videotapes of her mother. I think you can figure the rest out for yourself.

As most of us know, Teri Hatcher played Lois Lane in a previous iteration of the Superman legend, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, which ran for four seasons. But only a few of us know that Smallville is just following a tradition: Phyllis Coates, who played Lois Lane opposite George Reeves in The Adventures of Superman (from 1952 to 1953) also took a turn as Lois' mother in Lois & Clark.

In other words, this marks the second time that a woman who starred as Lois Lane returned to play her mother.

Smallville's casting directors are especially fond of snagging former Superman alumni for their show. For the first seven seasons, Annette O'Toole, who played Lana Lang in the 1983 movie Superman III, took on the role of Martha Kent, Clark's adoptive mother. The late Christopher Reeve, who played Superman in four films, and Margot Kidder, who played Lois Lane in two (and a half) films, also made appearances in a plotline about Clark's alien origins.

Hatcher's appearance is just one of the delights that Smallville has in store for fans during its last season. Others include John Glover (Lionel Luthor) and John Schneider (Jonathan Kent).

So what do you think? Will we learn that Lois' mom didn't die after all, or will we get to witness a resurrection miracle?
