That long-delayed Spider-Man musical is FINALLY ready to rock

For a while it looked as if Spider-Man was doomed, and not at the hands of Doc Ock. But after a series of setbacks that made it look as if it would never arrive—Alan Cumming OUT as the Green Goblin! Evan Rachel Wood OUT as Mary Jane!—the Spider-Man musical (aka Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark) is finally ready to hit Broadway.

Preview performances will begin Nov. 14, with the opening night set for Dec. 21. If you're excited by the prospect of seeing Spidey fly across the stage, so are we. But—

There are only two ways this thing can go. Either it will be the greatest accomplishment in the history of theater, or it will simply be another miserable attempt by the Hollywood machine to suck the hard-earned money from our wallets. Here are a few factors to help predict how it will turn out.

Julie Taymor (Frida, Across the Universe) as the director is an interesting choice. Can she use her theatrical background to turn Spider-Man into a Shakespearean masterpiece?

Bono and the Edge wrote all of the music and lyrics. Sounds good to us. That is, of course, if they are able to keep the political commentary to a minimum.

The budget is projected to be approximately $52 million (the highest of all time for Broadway), with sets elaborate enough to let Spider-Man swing across skyscrapers.

It's hard to tell whether there is really any substance here, so the only way to truly find out is by buying a ticket. Will you be coughing up the $140 to find out for yourself?
