Joe Dante returns to his Gremlins roots in The Hole 3D trailer

We don't care what people say: Gremlins is a superb Christmas movie, right up there with It's a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street. Not only that, but it sits among the pantheon of Great '80s Kids Movies. (Think E.T., The Dark Crystal and Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo. OK, maybe not that last one.)

And now it looks like Gremlin's director Joe Dante is returning to his roots with another Great Kids Movie in The Hole, which promises to be just as scary as Mogwai's evil cousins.

Empire Online posted the international trailer (see below). It starts off nice: A couple of fresh-faced young brothers in a new house. A friendly female neighbor. And a multi-padlocked door in the floor of their basement. What could possibly go wrong? Surely they won't open it. (Who would do such a thing?)

Here's the official synopsis:

"After moving in a new neighborhood, brothers Dane (Chris Massoglia) and Lucas (Nathan Gamble) and their neighbor Julie (Haley Bennett) discover a bottomless hole in the basement of their home. They find that once the hole is exposed, evil is unleashed. With strange shadows lurking around every corner and nightmares coming to life, they are forced to come face to face with their darkest fears to put an end to the mystery of THE HOLE."

Good news: It makes good use of creepy, talking dolls.

Bad news: It's riding the 3D gravy train. (Does everything have to be 3D these days?)

Best line of the trailer: "You've got a gateway to hell under your house. ... And that is really cool."

The Hole does not yet have a U.S. release date, but will premiere in the U.K. on Sept. 24, 2010.
