Finally—fake meat that tastes and feels like the real thing

When Star Trek characters want to eat meat, they don't have to deal with all the messy slaughtering that we do, because the food replicators of the future are able provide anything they ask for. Well, thanks to a team of scientists from the University of Missouri, we're one step closer to food replicators—at least in terms of doing away with that killing part—because they've finally figured out how to make fake meat that tastes and feels like chicken, Time magazine reports.

Up until now, though soy substitutes have been able to provide the flavor of meat, the texture has always been somewhat ... lacking.

But according to Time, Fu-Hung Hsieh and Harold Huff have solved that problem by creating:

The first soy product that not only can be flavored to taste like chicken but also breaks apart in your mouth the way chicken does: not too soft, not too hard, but with that ineffable chew of real flesh. When you pull apart the Missouri invention, it disjoins the way chicken does, with a few random strands of "meat" hanging loosely.

So are you ready to give up your chicken? Or will you keep eating it until they pry it from your cold, dead (and greasy) hands?
