Another possible Captain America? Yes—Channing Tatum

[Updated: Now is reporting that Marvel Studios has approached G.I. Joe star Channing Tatum to play Captain America, and that it comes down to Marvel making an offer, and Tatum either accepting it or rejecting it.]

Is there any leading man in Hollywood who hasn't been considered for the role of Captain America? Though director Joe Johnston said last month that he had hopes of casting an unknown actor, the list of known actors whose names we've heard tossed about as being possible candidates continues to grow.

According to hitfix, the latest contender to join Mike Vogel (She's Out of My League), Garret Hedlund (Tron Legacy), Chris Evans (Fantastic Four), Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights), Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl), Michael Cassidy (Smallville) and others is Ryan Phillippe.

Phillippe last appeared on the screen in 2008's critical and box-office disappointment Stop-Loss and will be seen next as a member of Will Forte's crack team in MacGruber.

Even though casting is unresolved, The First Avenger: Captain America is still scheduled to open July 22, 2011.
