If you thought the pilot episode of Fox's comic-inspired Human Target was big, wait for tonight's second episode, "Rewind," which puts a new twist on the airplane thriller genre. Literally. (Spoilers ahead!)
"The idea is that with any of these set pieces, they've all been done to death," said series executive producer Jonathan E. Steinberg in a press conference last week in Pasadena, Calif. "You've seen the plane movie. You've seen the train movie. We're trying to do something you've never seen before in every one of them. With the plane, turning it into a bit of The Poseidon Adventure was something that we hadn't seen before."
In "Rewind," Christopher Chance (Mark Valley) and Winston (Chi McBride) have to protect a hacker on an airplane from an unknown assassin. Before the flight is over, Chance finds himself in the cockpit, literally putting out fires in midair.
"We realized we can't make a movie, but our writers just wanted to be really smart," Valley said. "They are really smart, so they said, 'Let's just put our brains together and put a lot of thought into this before we do it.'"
McBride promised fans that each episode would have a thrilling set piece done in a way they haven't seen before. "The building, the cable car, the monastery," McBride said, "it's pretty wild stuff. The crazy car chase. There's a lot going on."
James Bond has already done cable-car action, but is that a tough act to follow? "[It's] better than Moonraker," McBride bragged.
There's also that building episode. "Yeah, it's our little tip of the hat to Die Hard, and it's a really good episode," McBride acknowledged.
Valley himself elaborated on the upcoming episode involving a monastery. "There's an episode where I have to save this one guy who was involved in this kind of high-stakes theft ring," Valley said. "He goes undercover in a monastery, so Chance has to go into this monastery in Quebec and dress up as a monk and be a monk to try to find this guy. Once they get there, they realize that why he went there has to do with something that the chief abbot brought back after World War II, which is something that belonged to the pope. It's hidden somewhere in these caves and these caverns of this little monastery. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise's cousin is chasing after us. William Mapother is fantastic. The rest of the M:I 2 bad guy crew is chasing after us."
Got all that? Human Target airs tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Next week, the show airs on a special Tuesday night, Jan. 26, at 9 p.m. (to make way for the State of the Union address) before settling into its Wednesday 8 p.m. timeslot the following week.
